Managing risk in outdoor learning
Our educators have the skills and experience to assess the risks and benefits of activities in our learning programs. We plan activities carefully so participants can explore, learn and play in nature safely.
Support challenge and adventure
Our programs encourage participants to explore and learn through play in the natural environment. We provide opportunities for acceptable risk in environments that are engaging and challenging.
These experiences help participants build confidence and develop lifelong skills through real-world learning. Some lessons are best learned by exploring, trying new things and testing personal limits.

When designing activities, our educators consider:
- what skills and abilities participants will develop
- what level of risk is needed to support the benefits of nature play.
Assess risks in outdoor learning
Learning outdoors means participants may encounter natural hazards. Our team carefully assesses each activity and environment.
We consider:
- which hazards need to be removed or reduced
- which hazards are acceptable and provide learning opportunities.
Types of risks participants may encounter
Participants may experience:
- moving across uneven ground
- moving through vegetation
- interacting with plants and animals
- learning in open spaces shared with other park users
- changing weather conditions
- learning and playing near water.
