Join us on Sunday 17 August for Science in the Swamp – a FREE family fun day out at Centennial Park!

Loch Avenue South will transform into a pop−up village of scientific wonder this National Science Week, with live science shows, hands−on experiments, native animals and over 30 stalls to explore.

Don’t miss the life−sized roaming dinosaur and your chance to meet real−life scientists at this special event.

Event highlights include:

  • Meet a dinosaur – Get up close to crowd-favourite Ginger, the life-sized Australovenator dinosaur, who returns in 2025
  • UNSW SciFest Village - Discover more than 30 scientists and 10 hands-on science stalls including slime, optical illusions, fitness challenges, 3D anatomy models, forensics, a spider show and a scavenger hunt
  • Young Entomologist Lab - An interactive space where kids and adults alike get to experience the discovery of the smaller side of nature
  • Creative Science show - A mind-blowing science show teaching physics, biology and space science with guaranteed explosive fun and astonishing experiments
  • Meet a Scientist, Inspiring Australia NSW - Researchers and scientists from various local universities will wow the Science Week crowd with demonstrations, experiments and displays

How to get to Science in the Swamp

Parking at Loch Avenue South is limited. We strongly recommend taking public transport to get to Science in the Swamp:

  • Take buses 333, 440 and 355.
  • Get off at Oxford St, before York St, Bondi Junction (Stop202260). Loch Avenue South is 1.2km from this stop.
  • Take Lightrail L2 and alight at Royal Randwick (Stop 2031196). Loch Avenue South is 1.5km from this stop.

Who can attend Science in the Swamp?

Science in the Swamp is a free community event – everyone is welcome to attend, however activities are catered to school-aged children. 

Will the event be on if it rains?

Yes, the event will be on rain or shine. It may be cancelled in extreme weather conditions. If the event is cancelled, a message will be posted on our website and Facebook and Instagram social media channels, so make sure you follow us to stay up to date. 

Can I bring my dog?

Absolutely! Dogs are welcome to join the fun. However, we ask that you keep your dog on a leash at all times during the event and away from food stalls.

Is there accessible parking?

Yes, accessible parking will be available. People requiring accessible parking will need to make themselves known to traffic controllers and present a valid mobility parking permit.    

What areas of Centennial Park are impacted by this event and when?

Science in the Swamp is a large event held at Loch Avenue South, Centennial Park. The site will have limited access for your own safety before and after the event on Saturday 17 August and Sunday 18 August after 3pm. 

Sounds impacts will be kept local to the event site. We are committed to complying with all legislation and guidelines covering amplified sound levels at outdoor events as set out in our Noise Management Plan.      

What should I bring to the event?

We recommend that you bring:

  • re-fillable drink bottle - you can fill these up at our free tap water stations
  • hat and sunscreen  
  • umbrella, in case of rain  
  • cash or cards to purchase food and other products  
  • bags to carry any items you wish to take home  
  • a picnic blanket.  
Will there be food available?

Yes – there will be several food trucks available.
