We will be conducting annual weed spraying across Western Sydney Parklands from 19-31 May 2025 to maintain quality grassed areas for visitors to enjoy.
The routine treatment will be targeted at reducing bindi and broadleaf weeds at Bungarribee, Lizard Log, The Dairy, Plough and Harrow, Shale Hills and WYLDE Mountain Bike & BMX.
The Bungarribee and Shale Hills dog parks will be closed to the public while spraying is underway. All other areas will remain open.
Please follow the signage in place, be mindful of the spraying if you are visiting with children or dogs and avoid the areas where possible. If contact is made, you must wash the area of contact immediately with water.
Pesticides in public open spaces
Greater Sydney Parklands is committed to the safety of all our park users and best practice for the ongoing care and maintenance of our parklands. Our Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program is a comprehensive approach that considers various methods of pest control before resorting to chemical treatment.
In this instance, the weed spraying will be carried out with low-risk herbicides:
- Casper Turf Herbicide
- Barricade Turf Herbicide
- WetOut
Western Sydney Parklands is included in the Greater Sydney Parklands Pesticide Use Notification Plan 2023, a statutory requirement which outlines the Parklands’ approach for their safe use. It has been approved by the Environmental Protection Authority in line with the Pesticides Act and Regulations.
Due to the size of Western Sydney Parklands and overall use of the area, the proposed application is recognised as industry best practice.
Low risk herbicides
Diluted applications of these herbicides are not harmful to humans, wildlife or domestic animals.
The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) consider the active ingredients in Casper, Barricade and WetOut a low risk.
