Early childhood and primary (K-6)

In bush craft: how to teach fire making, participants will learn how to safely engage children in the process of fire-making within an outdoor learning environment. 

This course aligns with nature pedagogy, which fosters a deeper connection to the natural world through immersive, experiential learning.

Educators will learn how to establish safe fire protocols, ensuring fire activities are suitable for groups of children in nature-based educational settings. You will practice lighting fires using only natural materials, explore foraging for kindling, and develop the confidence to use flint and steel in fire-making. 

The course also introduces campfire cooking and mindfulness practices, offering practical tools for engaging children with fire safely and creatively in outdoor spaces.

Key activities include:

  • Practicing fire-making with natural materials, flint, and steel in a safe, group setting
  • Learning how to cook over an open fire, including preparing damper dough
  • Incorporating mindfulness and storytelling around the campfire for a deeper connection
  • Engaging children in fire-making activities, sparking curiosity and learning through nature play
  • Understanding the principles of fire safety and risk management in outdoor environments
