Inner West Built Environment Awards

Greater Sydney Parklands, together with the Minister’s Stonework Program, was recently given a commendation Inner West Council’s Built Environment Awards (Marrickville Medal 2022) for the restoration of the main sandstone gates and gatehouse at Callan Park.

The awards celebrate our understanding of the built environment and heritage of the Inner West. This year’s theme was ‘Curiosity in and about the Built Environment’. Submission of the Callan Park Gates and gatehouse was fitting as they were the first structures associated with the mental health facility and are an ongoing symbol of the quality and beauty of the state significant heritage site.

The project restored the original, landmark qualities and functional purpose of the gates which had been in poor condition and locked for decades. The gatehouse was restored with a new slate roof, intrusive lead paint was, and windows and doors repaired.

We would like to congratulate all those involved in the project and the Inner West community for supporting the preservation of Callan Park’s heritage.
