Caring for Country through Cultural Burns

Cultural Burns were recently undertaken at Bungarribee and Cecil Park in Western Sydney Parklands, led by traditional Aboriginal knowledge and custodianship and supported by contemporary fire management.

Delivered through a partnership between Greater Sydney Parklands, Local Land Services, the Living Knowledge Network, Muru Mittigar and the NSW Rural Fire Service, the burns:

  • support biodiversity and native vegetation regeneration
  • reduce fuel loads and strengthen landscape resilience
  • protect cultural values and connections to Country
  • apply a Two-Eyed Seeing approach, combining Western science and Aboriginal understandings of Country to monitor ecosystem health before and after burns.

This collaborative approach is helping deliver positive environmental, cultural and community outcomes across the parklands.
