The NSW Government is investing $4.8 million over two years to demolish up to nine unsafe and structurally unsound buildings at Callan Park to continue the transformation of the park into one of Sydney’s most significant urban parklands.

The works will not only remove unsafe buildings, but it will also return up to 1.6 hectares of open and connected green space for Sydney’s growing inner west communities and park visitors to enjoy. Greater Sydney Parklands has taken a considered approach to the decision to remove the buildings within the central precinct of the park, guided by the Callan Park Conservation Management Plan 2011, Landscape Structure Plan 2021 and Draft Plan of Management 2025-2035.

The building removal work will provide many benefits to park users, while protecting and conserving Callan Park’s significant heritage buildings, trees and landscapes.

Works are anticipated to commence mid-2026 and be complete mid-2027.

When will the works take place?

The demolition works are planned to start in mid-2026. The community, tenants and park users will be notified in advance of the works and any temporary changes to visitor access, parking and traffic conditions and park facilities.

Are there safety and traffic control plans for the works?

Plans for ensuring park user safety and traffic movements will be developed before the start of works.

Why are the buildings being removed?

The buildings are not structurally sound, contain hazardous materials and pose a risk to public safety. Their removal will provide additional connected green space for the community to enjoy.

Are the buildings heritage protected?

The Callan Park Conservation Management Plan 2011 identifies the buildings as constructed in the mid-to-late 20th century and of low heritage value.

Will nearby mature trees be protected?

The mature trees located near the buildings will be protected during the works and retained. A small number of shrubs, weed trees and some assessed by a qualified arborist located next to the buildings will be removed.

What works are included in the project?

Project funding covers the removal of the buildings and associated works such as turfing. Future improvements to park facilities and landscapes including new plantings will be considered in the future as funding becomes available.

What is the approval pathway for the works?

On finalisation of the Callan Park Plan of Management 2025 to 2035, a Review of Environmental Factors and a Section 60 Heritage application will be the approval pathways for the works.

Will Callan Park’s heritage be protected?

All significant heritage buildings are retained and protected as per the Callan Park Conservation Management Plan 2011.
